Abstract Particle granulometry and morphology determine the main technological properties of powders and the properties of powder materials, i.e. those of the final product. A possible approach to the particle morphology description by image analysis system is presented in the paper. Analysis was carried out on three morphological different powders, namely superbronze powder produced by atomizing, brass powder and hard metal powder produced by disintegration. Images of the material microstructure were obtained by scanner from the photographs. Then the images were prepared and analysed by the digital image system DIPS. Particle morphology were described by several shape parameters : principal geometrical moments up to 4th order and characteristics derived from axes values of the equimomental Legendre ellipse such as dispersion and elongation. Differences among particles from the morphology point of view using these shape parameters were sought for. The analysis of morphology of powder particles in specimens revealed that the principal geometrical moments of the 2nd order, the 3rd order and the 4th order, describing the distribution around y-axis in the principal system of coordinates, as well as values of elongations were those parameters which showed the biggest morphological differences.
