Abstract Microscopy of materials specimens can provide important quantitative information about microstructures. Simple visual observation of images is not adequate to extract the important parameters. The goal of image analysis is to reduce the large amount of data represented by the image to a few significant quantitative values. On IMR SAS for this purpose image analyser DIPS 5.0. is used providing a series of measurements from which the researcher can choose. Image acquisitor TESCAN 1103 as a complementary equipment to scanning electron microscopes TESLA BS 340 and TESLA BS 343 is used for direct digital image acqusition. Images from light microscope and TEM can be digitalized from CCD camera attached to the microscopes using image analyzer DIPS 5.0. Porosity determination in doped BaTiO3 electroceramics and geometrical shape characterization of Al2O3 particle using digital image processing and analysis are presented. Images were digitized directly from scanning electron microscope TESLA BS 340. For geometrical shape characteristics determination of powder particles are used projection images in which the outer dimensions are seen.
