Abstract The paper presents the current topic that is the processing of the secondary raw materials among which belong wastes from iron- and steel-making that contain non-ferrous metals. The possibilities of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment of the above-mentioned wastes are described. The major components of the solid waste are iron oxides containing significant amount of non-ferrous metals, especially zinc and lead. In this study a flow-sheet for possible complex treatment of all related solid wastes generated in iron- and steel-making is suggested. Moreover, a specific method of hydrometallurgical treatment of dusts and sludges containing zinc was suggested. The aim of the present research is to propose such conditions of hydrometallurgical treatment under which zinc will be transferred from sludge into the solution while iron remains in the form of a solid residue. Resulting solution is subsequently treated to recover zinc and solid residue is recycled into iron-making process.
