Abstract Processes which are present at the boundary of solid refractory and melt (steel, slag etc.) are very important for the right estimation of the type of refractories for application. The static crucible corrosion test, as a simple experiment is very useful for study of these processes, because a direct observation of refractory – slag reactions in real systems is impossible. In the case of refractories with carbon content using of protective atmosphere is necessary. In the typical oxidizing (air) atmosphere at the temperature range 1400 – 1500 °C is present the intensive carbon oxidation of the carbon in magnesia – chrome refractory and ceramics body degradation is present, too. But it doesn’t correspond to the real conditions of the using of these refractories. For that reason were corrosion crucible tests adapted so that, carbon basic refractories was isolated from the atmosphere by high alumina castable cover. The experimental conditions and method of evaluation of results are described. The results are documented by macro and micrographs. According to these preliminary tests is possible to realize the corrosion test of refractories with carbon content by using of ceramic cover. It is necessary to estimate real condition of sample preparation by further experiments.
