NON-FERROUS HYDROMETALLURGY - INFORMATION DATABASE
Abstract
Proposal and realisation of any production process has to follow several general rules and steps which can be summarized as follows:
problem definition
literature survey and study of the literature sources
formulation of possible solutions/proposals
comparison of selected solution/proposal with other possible ones (pros and cons)
detailed elaboration of selected solution/proposal
theoretical aspects (thermodynamic calculations, energy balance, economy, diagrams, etc.)
laboratory experiments and evaluation of their results
pilot-plant experiments and evaluation of their results
proposal, construction and optimization of full-scale plant
full-scale plant operation

The above rules and steps cannot be skipped or interchanged. Maximum attention has to be paid to the each step of solution/proposal because any shortcoming will affect the efficiency of final solution.
One of the first steps in the decision making process is the literature survey and treatment (elaboration) of the literature sources.
Database system for effective treatment of scientific/technical information dealing with hydrometallurgy of non-ferrous metals (copper is used as an example) is described in this paper. The main idea to create such specialized database is based on the fact that hydrometallurgical processes are still matter of permanent interest of the researchers over the world. Consequently, completely new ideas or improvement of the already used technological steps appear in the literature. However, information are scattered throughout thousand articles and it is laborious and time consuming process to elaborate relevant information. The common databases are not very efficient since they describe the content of articles too generally. Here is the filed for specialized databases which can and should be created such a way as to provide maximum detailed and relevant information without need to consume the valuable time for extracting the information from original articles. This paper intends to add some more light to the problems accompanying creation and maintenance of such specialized databases.
