CLEANNESS OF STEEL SCRAP FOR OXYGEN CONVERTER PROCESS
Abstract
The contribution presents research results related to relationship between so called selectivity of scrap and level of tramping elements in steel. Tramping elements are elements that enter the steel melt in the production process. Their presence in steel even is small concentrations is harmful to quality of steel and / or the parameters of production process. Also influence of heavy scrap ratio in scrap charge on level of tramping elements is described. Steel scrap is subdivided into three categories called Selectivity I, II, and III. The Selectivity I contains steel scrap of the highest quality. It was found the use of Selectivity II and III steel scrap increased tramping elements level in final steel. Monthly distribution of tramping elements contents was not even. Higher contents of the elements were recorded in summer monthes regardless of Selectivity category.
Next, it was recognized what tramping elements are introduced into steel by heavy steel scrap. Calcium, vanadium, boron, cobalt, nickel, tin, zinc and copper contents in steel increased with increased contents of heavy scrap in the scrap charge. Tramping elements level in steel produced in steel plant of U.S.Steel Košice reaches the parameters of high quality clean steel.
