BEGINNING OF METAL FORMING AND UNIVERSITY STUDIES ON SLOVAKIA
Abstract
As the oldest written document concerning the metal forming on the territory of Slovakia, the foundation charter can be considered that constitutes the town Kremnica as a town, and the foundation of the mint in this town. This privilege was given by the king Charles Robert (1308 – 1342) from the Italian house of Anjou on the 17th Novembre 1328. The mint in Kremnica produces without interruption up to the present day. With its 679 years lasting tradition, it belongs to the oldest works not only in Slovakia, but over the world. The coining was considerably supported by the gold and silver ore mining in the Middle-Slovakia region near the town Banská Štiavnica and the town Kremnica itself. This activity needed educated specialists. Therefore in 1762, the monarch Maria Therese acknowledged with her signature the foundation of the first Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica on the territory of the present Slovakia. This Academy arose as the first in Europe and assured the education of graduated specialists in the whole sphere of montane sciences where the following science branches were involved: mineralogy, chemistry, hydraulics, mining surveying, ore dressing, non-ferrous metallurgy, coining and metal testing. In 1786, the first world congres of specialists in mining and metalurgy in the town Sklené Teplice in Slovakia was held. On this occasion, the first science society in the world – the Society of Mining Sciences (Sozietät der Bergbaukunde) was founded.
