UTILIZATION OF MECHANICALLY ACTIVATED CALCITE (CaCO3) FOR ZINC SORPTION FROM SOLUTIONS
Abstract
The special properties of fine particles with a high surface area and their significant occurence as the by-product waste in processing plants led to the suggestion that they may be utilized as sorbents for toxic metals.
This work presents modification of CaCO3 properties for zinc sorption from ZnSO4 solution. Calcite is one of the natural carbonates, which can be used as an effective sorbent for selective removal of metal ions from the wastewaters or mine waters.
By the aplication of mechanical activation is possible to produce material, which is able to bind big amount of zinc. We have studied the physico-chemical properties of calcite mechanically activated in planetary mill as well as the sorption ability for zinc removal from solution. The initial concentration of zinc was 25mgl-1 and initial pH value of solution ZnSO4 was 2. While only 58% of zinc sorption was determined a for non-activated sample, 98% of zinc sorption was determined for the mechanically activated sample. Specific surface area SA was determined by the low temperature nitrogen adsorption method, X-ray diffraction was measured on a diffractomer. The results of removal of zinc were describe by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
